Isambard Kingdom Brunel FRS (/ˈɪzəmbɑːrd bruːˈnɛl/; 9 April 1806 – 15 September 1859^[1]), adalah seorang rekayasawan mesin dan sipil Inggris yang dianggap sebagai "salah seorang tokoh paling cerdik dan produktif dalam sejarah teknik",^[2] "salah seorang rekayasawan besar abad ke-19",^[3] dan "tokoh penting Revolusi Industri yang mengubah lanskap Inggris melalui rancangannya yang inovatif dan konstruksi yang cerdas".^[4] Brunel membangun galangan kapal, Great Western Railway, serangkaian kapal uap, termasuk kapal uap transatlantik pertama yang digerakkan baling-baling, serta berbagai jembatan dan terowongan penting. Rancangannya merevolusi transportasi umum dan teknik modern.

Karya

Meskipun proyek-proyek Brunel tidak selalu berhasil, proyeknya pada umumnya menjadi solusi inovatif untuk masalah-masalah teknik klasik. Sepanjang kariernya, Brunel merancang banyak karya pertama dalam bidang teknik, termasuk membangun terowongan bawah sungai pertama yang dapat dilayari dan pengembangan SS Great Britain, kapal layar besi yang digerakkan baling-baling pertama, yang menjadi kapal terbesar di dunia ketika dibangun pada tahun 1843.^[5][6]

Brunel menetapkan standar untuk pembangunan jalur rel di Inggris, melakukan survei yang cermat untuk meminimalkan gradien dan kurva. Hal ini membutuhkan teknik konstruksi yang mahal, jembatan baru, viaduk baru, dan pembangunan Box Tunnel sepanjang dua mil (3.2 km). Salah satu gagasannya yang banyak diperdebatkan adalah lebar jalur "sepur luas" sepanjang 7 ft 1⁄4 in (2.140 mm), bukannya "sepur standar" sepanjang 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1.435 mm). Ia membuat takjub Britania dengan mengusulkan untuk memperpanjang Great Western Railway ke arah barat menuju Amerika Utara dengan membangun kapal besi bertenaga uap. Ia merancang dan membangun tiga kapal yang merevolusi teknik kelautan: SS Great Western (1838), SS Great Britain (1843), dan SS Great Eastern (1859).

Pada tahun 2002, Brunel berada di posisi kedua dalam jajak pendapat publik BBC yang menetapkan "100 Tokoh Britania Terhebat". Pada tahun 2006, memperingati dua abad kelahirannya, sebuah acara TV yang mengisahkan mengenai karya dan kehidupannya ditayangkan dengan judul Brunel 200.^[7]
