A música foi escrita por John Lennon e Paul McCartney ajudou a terminá-la. Foi gravada em 7 tomadas no dia 17 de Abril de 1966 e vocais foram adicionados no dia 19.[3]
Referências às Drogas
A canção contém várias referências às drogas, incluindo o fato de que traficantes de drogas às vezes são chamados de 'doctors' (doutores) na gíria inglesa. Os Beatles eram freqüentemente acusados de porem referências às drogas em suas músicas, apesar de eles negarem fazê-lo intencionalmente; ironicamente, as referências nessa música são muito pouco percebidas. John disse que o 'Doutor Robert' na verdade era ele mesmo: "Eu era o único que carregava todas as pílulas nas excursões... nos primeiros dias"[4]. No entanto, foi especulado que o Doutor Roberto na vida real era o Doutor Robert Freymann, que supria "grande quantidade de anfetamina para o povo"[5]. Outra especulação é de que seja sobre Dr. Charles Roberts, um físico de Nova Iorque.[6][7].
