Bibliografija Edgara Allana Poea

Edgar Allan Poe (1809. – 1849.) bio je američki pisac, pjesnik, novinar i književno kritičar, jedna od vodećih figura američkog i svjetskog romantizma. Tokom karijere je objavio brojna djela, od poezije i (uglavnom kratke) proze do eseja i književnih kritika. Zbog njegovog mračnog stila, djela mu se uglavnom svrstavaju pod mračni romantizam.^[1] Danas ga se smatra ocem kriminalističkog i detektivskog žanra, dok se njegov literarni detektiv C. Auguste Dupin smatra uzorom za sve kasnije poznate detektive, uključujući i Sherlocka Holmesa.^[2]

Poeova književna karijera započela je 1827. godine izlaskom zbirke poezije Tamerlane and Other Poems. Zbirka je tiskana anonimno (kao autor je naveden "jedan Bostonac") i u samo 50 primjeraka te je prošla praktički nezamijećeno.^[3] U prosincu 1829., Poe je u Baltimoreu objavio zbirku Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems,^[4] nakon čega se kratkom pričom "Metzengerstein" (1832.) prvi puta okušao u prozi.^[5] Za života, njegova daleko najuspješnija i najčitanija priča bila je "The Gold-Bug",^[6] koja mu je donijela i $100 nagrade, najviši iznos što ga je u komadu dobio za neko svoje djelo.^[7] Jedno od njegovih najvažnijih djela, priča "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", izašla je 1841. godine te se danas smatra prvom modernom detektivskom pričom;^[8] sam Poe ju je nazvao "pričom o rezoniranju".^[2] Poe je postao naširoko poznat nakon objave poeme The Raven 1845. godine,^[9] mada mu ista nije donijela financijsku dobit.^[10] Izdavački biznis je u tom periodu bio u jako lošem stanju tako da je dobar dio Poeovog opusa napisan specifično kako bi udovoljio afinitetima široke publike.^[11]
